eFoil vs. Foil Assist: Which Setup is Right for You?

eFoil vs. Foil Assist: Which Setup is Right for You?

As electric hydrofoiling continues to explode in popularity, riders are increasingly faced with a major decision: should you buy a dedicated eFoil (like the Waydoo Flyer EVO), or invest in a modular Foil Assist system (like the Manta TakeOff EVO)? Both offer incredible experiences on the water, but they cater to very different types of riding.

The Dedicated eFoil Experience

A dedicated eFoil is an all-in-one package. The motor is permanently integrated into the mast, and the board features a large internal compartment for a high-capacity battery.

  • Pros: Massive ride times (up to 2 hours), extreme ease of use, and plug-and-play setup. It's essentially a personal electric jet ski that flies. Perfect for flat water, lakes, and riders who just want to cruise.
  • Cons: Heavy. A full eFoil setup can weigh 70+ lbs, making it difficult to carry long distances. You also can't easily use the board for unpowered surf foiling.

The Modular Foil Assist Experience

A Foil Assist (like Mantafoil) is a lightweight motor and battery system that straps onto your existing foil board and mast. Instead of powering you for 2 hours of continuous riding, it's designed to give you just enough thrust to catch a wave or get up on foil in zero wind, at which point you release the throttle and surf naturally.

  • Pros: Incredibly lightweight (often under 10 lbs added). It doesn't ruin the swing weight of your board, meaning you can still carve naturally on ocean swells or boat wakes. You can also easily remove it to use your setup for prone foiling or wing foiling.
  • Cons: Much shorter battery life if you try to use it like an eFoil. It requires more balance and skill to use, as you are riding much smaller, sinker-style boards.

The Verdict

If you live on a lake, want to cruise for miles, or want a fun toy the whole family can easily learn in 30 minutes, buy a dedicated Waydoo eFoil. If you are already a surfer, wing foiler, or wake foiler looking to maximize your wave count and ride ocean swells without burning out your shoulders paddling, the Manta Foil Assist is your holy grail.
